GPP — general physical preparedness — is the broad base of strength, engine and movement quality that every specific goal is built on. It is what general coached training is.
General physical preparedness is fitness before specialization: strong in the basic patterns, an engine with a base and a top end, joints that tolerate work, a body ready to be pointed at something. Every specific ambition — a race, a ski season, a test date — draws down on this account.
The under-appreciated truth: for most people, GPP is not the preparation phase. It is the destination. Being generally strong, conditioned and durable is the goal that makes every other part of life work.
What a GPP block contains
The unsurprising ingredients, balanced rather than maximized: the five movement patterns loaded and progressed, carries for the trunk and grip, an aerobic base with a weekly visit to higher intensity, and mobility woven through rather than appended. It is, almost exactly, the default programming of a general coached studio — which is why "what program should I do?" so often answers itself: the general one, done consistently, until a specific goal earns a tilt.
How specificity borrows from it
When a date appears on the calendar — Seek the Peak, a ski trip, a fitness test — training tilts specific: the relevant qualities get concentrated attention for a block, and the general base funds the tilt. Specialize without the base and the specific block runs out of account to draw on; that is where compressed test-prep injuries and week-one ski soreness both come from. The rhythm most members live: GPP as the year's default, with purposeful tilts as seasons demand, exactly the architecture the seasonal map describes.
Common questions
Is GPP just another word for cross-training?
Close cousins. Cross-training usually means varying activities; GPP means deliberately building the general qualities — the variety is a means, not the definition.
How long should I stay in GPP?
As the default: indefinitely, punctuated by specific tilts. As preparation for a first specific goal: months of base beats weeks of cramming, every time.
Can GPP be my only training forever?
Happily — generally fit, strong and durable is a complete ambition. Specificity exists for people with dates and finish lines; it is not a maturity requirement.
