What is linear progression?
In one breath

Linear progression is adding a small, fixed amount of load every session or every week while the sets and reps stay the same. It is the beginner's engine: it runs for roughly the first year of consistent training, then stalls, and a slower rule replaces it.

Linear progression is the simplest rule in strength training: same sets, same reps, a little more weight each time. It works because a new lifter's nervous system adapts faster than the loads can climb, so a jump that would be absurd for an experienced lifter is merely Tuesday for a beginner.

The word linear describes the graph. Plot the bar weight against the date and, for a while, it is a straight line going up. Then it is not, and that is normal.

The goblet-to-front-squat ladder

A beginner's squat pattern here often runs like this over the first months, each step a session or a week apart depending on how the last rep looked.

  1. Goblet squat, three sets of eight, a light dumbbell. Add one dumbbell size each session while every rep stays smooth.
  2. The dumbbell becomes awkward to hold before the legs are tired. That is the signal to move, not a failure.
  3. Front squat with the empty bar, same sets and reps. It feels like a step down; it is a step onto a taller ladder.
  4. Add the smallest plates each session. When a rep slows, the same jump comes weekly instead. When a weekly jump fails twice, linear progression is over for this lift.

The ladder is one movement pattern climbing through two implements. The rule stays linear the whole way; only the size and frequency of the jump change.

The confusion: a phase, not a philosophy

When the line flattens, people conclude the program is broken or the exercise is wrong, and switch both. Neither is true. Linear progression stops because the fast neural adaptations that powered it, the novice gains, have been spent, and the tissue changes that drive strength from then on arrive over months rather than sessions. The lift is fine. The rule needs replacing.

What replaces it is slower on purpose: double progression for accessories, weekly waves or a heavy top set with lighter back-off sets for the main lifts, and blocks of several weeks in place of single sessions as the unit of progress. The line still rises. It just rises over a longer axis.

Where it shows up at Coresa

In the first months of a member's program, on the main squat, hinge, push and pull, and never on everything at once. The coach sets the jump size (smaller for upper-body lifts) and reads the last rep to decide whether today's jump is honest. Since loads are recorded, the flattening line is visible in the book before the member feels it, and the coach changes the rule rather than the exercise. In 1-on-1 personal training that decision follows the assessment; in a group it happens per person, per lift.

Common questions

What is the smallest jump worth making?

Whatever the equipment allows. The smallest plates on a barbell make a jump most people cannot feel, which is exactly what keeps the line going for weeks after bigger jumps have stopped working.

Should I reset the weight after a missed session?

After one missed session, no: repeat the last load. After two weeks away, take a step back and climb again; the return is quick and the line usually overtakes where it stopped.

Does linear progression work for upper-body lifts?

Yes, for a shorter time. Smaller muscles stall on fixed jumps sooner, which is why presses and rows move to double progression while squats and deadlifts are still climbing linearly.
