
Relative strength is strength per kilogram of you — what hills, chin-ups and mountain sports actually care about, as opposed to the absolute number on the bar.
Absolute strength is what the barbell reads; relative strength is that number divided by your bodyweight — and the division is what most of life grades. The Grind does not know your deadlift; it knows what each step costs per kilogram carried. So does the chin-up bar, the ski turn, and the eighth flight of stairs.
It is the strength metric with two levers: get stronger, or carry less that isn't muscle. Most people improving their body composition are raising it from both ends at once, often while the absolute numbers barely move.
Where relative strength runs the show
Anywhere your own body is the load: climbing — stairs, trails, the Grind and its stopwatch — bodyweight training and its milestone first chin-up, skiing and riding where every turn absorbs your mass, and plain aging, where getting off the floor is a relative-strength test with high stakes. Absolute strength still matters — the suitcase weighs what it weighs regardless of you — which is why programs train both rather than picking a religion.
Training it, from both directions
The strength direction is ordinary progressive training with a tilt toward single-leg and bodyweight-adjacent work, where the transfer is most direct. The mass direction is body-composition arithmetic — and here the framing genuinely helps people: a recomposition that swaps fat for muscle can leave the scale still while every hill in the neighbourhood gets easier, exactly the effect the recomposition answer describes. It is also why coaches measure progress in stairs and carries rather than scale weight: relative strength is the number your Tuesday actually feels.

What is a good relative strength benchmark?
The commonly cited bodyweight-ratio reference points are collected in the strength-standards answer — held loosely, as compass rather than gate. Your own trend is the benchmark that pays.
Does losing weight automatically raise relative strength?
Only if the loss is fat and the muscle is defended with lifting — which is the entire case for strength training in a deficit. Lose muscle and both numbers fall.
Why can smaller people often do more chin-ups?
The denominator. Less mass per unit of pulling muscle is a structural head start — and the reason chin-ups reward recomposition faster than almost any lift.
