What is training age?

What is training age?
In one breath

Training age is how long you have trained consistently — months and years of actual sessions, not your birthday. It predicts what your body needs better than calendar age does.

Training age counts the years you have actually trained, and it explains something calendars cannot: why a 55-year-old who has lifted for a decade trains harder and heavier than a 25-year-old in their first month. The body keeps score by exposure, not by candles.

It is the quiet variable behind most programming decisions here — how fast loads climb, how much variety a program can hold, and how much progress a year can reasonably contain.

What each training age changes

Training ageWhat progress looks likeWhat the program emphasizes
Months (novice)Loads climb almost weekly — the famous newbie gains, largely neuralFew movements, patient technique, linear progression
A few years (intermediate)Monthly progress, earned by managed fatigueBlocks, deliberate variation, honest effort tracking
Many years (advanced)Quarterly progress, fought forSpecialization, precise recovery, patience as a skill

The delightful corollary: a true beginner of any calendar age owns the steepest progress curve in the building. The 60-year-old novice does not get a diluted program — they get the novice program, with joint-respecting movement choices, and the novice results that come with it.

Why it resets slower than people fear

A long break rewinds training age only partially. Strength built over years returns in months — the tissue remembers and the nervous system relearns fast — which is why restarters follow a compressed version of the ladder rather than starting from true zero. The honest restart arc is mapped in coming back after a break; the practical rule is that your training age determines the restart pace, and your ego is not consulted. Tell a coach both numbers — years trained, years off — and the first block writes itself.

Common questions

Does inconsistent training count toward training age?

Partially — a decade of January-only training is a few months of real exposure. Count the stretches where you trained at least twice a week for months at a time; that is the number that predicts anything.

Can training age go backwards?

Detraining erodes fitness but the skill and tissue memory persist, so it rewinds slowly and returns quickly. The maintenance-dose research in the busy-seasons answer covers how little it takes to hold.

Why do coaches ask about it on the consult?

Because it sets the starting loads, the progression speed and the realistic promises. It is the difference between programming for who you are and programming for who you were.
