What is zone 2?
In one breath

Zone 2 is conversational-effort cardio — the pace you could hold while speaking in full sentences. It is the intensity that builds the aerobic base most people skip.

Zone 2 is the effort you could sustain while telling a story out loud: breathing clearly elevated, sentences still possible, a pace that feels almost suspiciously sustainable. In the five-zone heart-rate model it sits just above easy strolling and well below the huffing middle where most people accidentally do all their cardio.

It is the least glamorous intensity in the building and the one with the best press in longevity circles for a reason: this is where the aerobic engine's foundations — the base everything harder stands on — actually get poured.

Finding it without a lab

The talk test outranks the gadgets: full sentences, comfortably, for the whole session — if you can only manage phrases, you have drifted up; if you could sing, drift up a little. The heart-rate displays put a number to the same effort and teach your feel over time, and the classic beginner discovery is humbling: genuine zone 2 is slower than pride prefers. On the floor here its purest form is the treadmill incline walk — grade up, speed modest, conversation intact — which is also the rainy season's most underrated hour.

Why the base deserves its hype, mostly

Sustained conversational work drives the deep aerobic machinery — the capillaries and mitochondria that pay for everything from faster between-set recovery to a calmer resting heart rate — and it does so at a recovery cost close to zero, which is why volume of it can accumulate where intervals cannot. The honest caveat: it is not magic, it is just the neglected half. The complete engine wants both this base and a small dose of genuinely hard intervals on top, in roughly the mostly-easy split HIIT versus LISS lays out. The common failure is living in neither — every session at the medium grind that builds the base poorly and sharpens nothing.

Common questions

How much zone 2 do I need a week?

More than none is the honest floor — a couple of 30-to-45-minute pieces changes things within months. Walking the Lonsdale slope with intent counts, as the hilly-walking answer argues.

Is zone 2 too easy to bother with if I'm fit?

The fitter you are, the more deliberately easy it must be — that is the tell of someone actually training zones rather than ego. Elite endurance training is famously mostly this.

Can I do zone 2 the day after hard training?

It is the ideal day-after: enough movement to help, too little stress to cost. That is most of what active recovery means.
