A 30-minute treadmill incline interval session

A 30-minute treadmill incline interval session

This is the studio's rainy-season answer to the mountain: thirty minutes on the treadmill, built as a pyramid of climbing efforts with honest flat recoveries. It borrows its structure from the hill-repeats page and points it at one goal — sustained grade tolerance, the currency the Grind trades in.

Grades are deliberately not prescribed as numbers. Your climbing grade is whatever makes the stated effort true, hands-free; it will be different from the next person's and steeper than your own in two months.

The session at a glance

Time: about 30 minutes
Equipment: treadmill with real incline range
For: Grind and Seek the Peak preparation, rainy-season climbers, and anyone wanting structured incline work in half an hour.
Not for: A first-ever treadmill session — spend a week of steady incline walks learning the machine and the effort scale first.

Warm-up

  1. Five minutes: start flat and easy, nudging the grade up every minute until the legs feel the hill arriving.
  2. No stretching required — the ramp is the warm-up.

The pyramid — about 22 minutes

Climb hard, recover flat and easy, and let the pyramid's shape do the pacing: efforts get longer to the middle, shorter on the way out. Hard means you could hold the interval but would not chat through it.

Make it harder or easier

Harder: One notch of grade across the whole pyramid, or grow the middle climb toward six minutes. Change one dial per week, never both.

Easier: Halve the climb lengths (1-2-3-2-1 minutes) at a grade you can hold hands-free. The shape and the lesson survive at any size.

Common questions

What grade should I actually use?

The one that makes hard true for a two-to-four-minute climb without touching the rails. Discover it in session one by starting conservative — the number is yours, not the internet's.

How does this map to the Grouse Grind?

The Grind is roughly 45–60+ minutes of unrelenting grade. This pyramid builds the tolerance in instalments; pair it weekly with a steady incline walk and leg strength work, per the Grind-time answer's full plan.

Can I run the climbs instead of walking?

Once steep walking stops reaching hard, yes — a slow uphill jog is the natural next currency. Keep the recoveries as walks either way.
