
Detraining is the loss of training adaptations when training stops or falls below the dose that holds them. It runs on a staggered timeline: conditioning fades first, within a couple of weeks; strength holds for several weeks; the skill of the movements holds longest of all.
Detraining is not one process but three on different clocks. The aerobic system, which adapted fastest, unwinds fastest. Muscle and strength, which took months, take months to leave. The movement patterns themselves, once learned, barely leave at all. Knowing which clock you are on is the difference between a calm return and a panicked one.

The practical cost is one uncomfortable week and a fortnight of intervals that feel unfair. The strength you spent months building is still there, waiting for the nervous system to shake the dust off.
The confusion: detraining versus deloading, and muscle turning to fat
A deload is a planned reduction that keeps the loads heavy and preserves everything; detraining is what happens below that floor. The first week away is not detraining at all: fatigue drops faster than fitness, which is why many people return from a short break feeling strong. Detraining begins where maintenance ends, roughly when the second week passes without a heavy set.
Muscle does not turn to fat. They are different tissues; one shrinks slowly while the other, on holiday food, may grow. The two happening at once is the origin of the myth.
Why the return is faster, and where it shows up here
Muscle that was trained keeps structural changes for a long time after it shrinks, and the nervous system keeps the patterns, so rebuilding runs at several times the speed of the first build. Does detraining happen faster as you get older?
Somewhat, and the rebuild is a little slower, which is the argument for never letting a break run past two weeks without a heavy set. The direction is the same at every age; the margins are thinner after sixty.
Is hiking or walking enough to slow detraining from lifting?
It slows the conditioning loss, which is the fast one, and does nothing for strength. A single heavy session in the middle of a break holds more than a week of walking.
Should I train hard right before a break to bank fitness?
No. A hard week before two weeks off leaves you detraining from a state of fatigue. Train normally, then go, and the first week away is effectively a deload.
