
That deep ache peaking a day or two after training is DOMS — delayed onset muscle soreness. It's the muscle's response to unaccustomed work, especially the lowering (eccentric) portion of exercises: microscopic disruption in the muscle fibres, followed by a repair and sensitization process that makes them tender to touch and movement.
One thing it is not: lactic acid. Lactate produced during exercise clears from your muscles within about an hour of finishing, so it cannot explain soreness that shows up the next evening and peaks on day two. That myth deserves a plain burial.
The real mechanism, in plain language
When muscle fibres produce force while lengthening — lowering a weight, walking downhill, descending stairs — some of their internal structures get disrupted at a microscopic level. The body responds with repair and remodelling, and part of that response makes local nerve endings temporarily more sensitive. The soreness you feel is largely that sensitivity, which is why it lags the workout by a day or two rather than arriving immediately.
Novelty is the main trigger. Ten familiar squats might produce nothing, while ten minutes of a brand-new exercise can leave you negotiating with staircases.
Why the lowering phase does the damage
Eccentric contractions generate high force with fewer fibres sharing the load, which concentrates the mechanical stress. - Sharp joint pain rather than a dull muscle ache
- Very dark, cola-coloured urine after an extreme session — seek medical care right away, as this can indicate a serious condition

Common questions
Does no soreness mean the workout didn't work?
No. Once your body adapts to a movement, you can progress for months with little or no soreness at all. Loads, reps, and performance trending upward are the real evidence a program is working.
Can I do anything to reduce DOMS?
Modestly, yes: ease into new exercises over a couple of weeks, keep moving gently on sore days, and protect your sleep. Light activity and easy stretching relieve symptoms temporarily; nothing reliably erases DOMS outright.
Should I take anti-inflammatories for ordinary soreness?
Most people don't need to, and there's some suggestion that routine anti-inflammatory use may slightly blunt the adaptation you trained for. If soreness feels bad enough to medicate regularly, ask a pharmacist or doctor rather than making it a habit.
Why do beginners get DOMS so much worse?
