
Range of motion is how far a joint travels during an exercise, from the start position to the deepest point and back. Coaches usually want the fullest range you can control under load, and treat shorter ranges as a deliberate tool rather than a shortcut.
Range of motion is the distance a joint moves through an exercise: how deep the squat goes, how far the bar travels on a row, how low the chest gets on a push-up. The default coaching preference is the fullest range you can control with the weight in your hands, because the long positions are where muscle is built and joints are kept honest. The important word is control. Range you can reach but cannot own under load is not yet yours to train in.
A worked example: three squatters, three ranges
Three members squat side by side on the rig. The first has stiff ankles and stops well above parallel with the heels lifting, so the coach slides small plates under them: a heels-elevated goblet squat, and suddenly the full range is available and controlled. The second sinks to the floor easily but the pelvis tucks under at the bottom, so the prescribed range is the depth just above where the tuck begins, with the aim of extending it over the block. The third is rebuilding a back after physiotherapy and hinges from a rack pull instead of the floor, the deadlift's partial range, while the coach adds a few centimetres a week. Three ranges, one pattern, each of them full for that person on that day.
The common confusion: mobility is not loaded range
People arrive with a picture of range from stretching: if I can touch my toes, I have the range to deadlift from the floor. Mobility, the range you can move through and control unloaded, is the starting budget, and loaded range is usually smaller, because holding position with a bar in your hands demands strength the stretch never asked for. The other confusion is that partial range is cheating. A rack pull, a paused squat at a sticking point or a shortened press around a sore shoulder are partials chosen on purpose, and each has a job. Partials that arrive by accident, because the weight got heavy and the depth quietly shrank, are the ones that count against you.
Where it shows up in a Coresa session
Range is set per person in the first session and written down beside the load, so the same weight moved deeper is recorded as progress. In small group training it is one of the ways eight people do the same slot at eight levels: the depth changes before the exercise does. A coach's most common range correction is not deeper but the same depth every rep; the bottom of a set should match the top of it.
Common questions
Can I make an exercise harder with less weight and more range?
Yes, and it is often the best progression available. A squat that gets ten centimetres deeper at the same weight is a heavier squat for the muscles; the bar just does not know it.
Will lifting through full range make me more flexible?
Often, yes. Loaded work at long muscle lengths improves usable range as well as strength, which is why lifters who squat deep and Romanian deadlift slowly tend to need less stretching than they expect.
What if my range is different on each side?
Common, and worth telling the coach. On two-sided lifts the prescribed range is set to the more limited side, and single-leg or single-arm work is used to close the gap over time.
