Time under tension — TUT — is the stopwatch view of a set: a set of eight with slow four-second reps keeps the muscle working perhaps forty seconds, versus fifteen for the same eight hurried. For a period, that stopwatch was marketed as the secret variable of muscle growth.
The honest reading of the evidence since: duration is not the driver — effort is. Sets taken near honest difficulty grow muscle across wildly different tempos and durations. TUT survives as a useful lens, not a law.
What the evidence keeps saying
When researchers match effort, deliberate slow-motion sets and ordinary controlled sets build muscle similarly; the sets that underperform are the ones where speed is a symptom of cheating — momentum, bounce, gravity doing the lowering for free. So the practical rule inherits everything and discards the mysticism: control every phase, own the lowering, take the set close to honest reserve — and let the stopwatch fall where it falls. Chasing a duration number for its own sake mostly produces lighter weights and theatrical counting.
Where the idea still earns its keep
As tempo prescription, mainly: slowing a phase to teach position, to load the eccentric qualities descents demand, or to progress a movement when the next dumbbell jump is too big — adding a second of descent adds demand without adding a kilogram, one of the subtler overload levers. It also polices honesty at the light end of the rack: accessory work done with control and real tension beats the same movement swung, which is half of why coaches keep those weights modest.

Are super-slow reps ever the right tool?
