
Eccentric training emphasizes the lowering phase — the part of a lift where muscle lengthens under load. It is where soreness comes from and where descent strength is built.
Every rep has a lifting half and a lowering half, and the lowering half — the eccentric — is the strange one: muscles produce more force while lengthening, get damaged more by it, and adapt to it most specifically. Eccentric training simply means giving that half deliberate attention instead of letting gravity have it for free.
On the North Shore this is not a technicality. Descending is the local pastime nobody trains for: the Grind's exit stairs, ski turns, trail descents — all eccentric events, all sending their invoices to quadriceps that only ever practised going up.
Why the lowering half hits differently
Lengthening muscle under load produces high force with less effort felt — which is why you can lower more than you can lift — and creates the micro-damage that drives both next-day soreness and long-term resilience. Unaccustomed eccentric work is precisely what DOMS punishes; accustomed eccentric work is what makes the same hike or ski day cost nothing a season later. The repeated-bout effect is the good news: the soreness tax is steep once and cheap forever after.
How it is trained, and who needs it most
Mostly through tempo work — three-to-four-second descents on squats, split squats and hinges — plus movements that are eccentric by nature: step-downs, slow lowering on a chin-up not yet won, controlled negatives everywhere. It is programmed patiently, because the same quality that adapts powerfully also bites when overdosed.
The who-needs-it list is the North Shore census: skiers and boarders before the season, hikers before the Grind reopens, trail and mountain-bike riders before descent volume arrives, and anyone whose knees complain going downstairs more than up — a classic sign the eccentric side has been left untrained. The sport-specific versions live in ski conditioning and mountain-bike conditioning.
Common questions
Why can I lower more weight than I can lift?
Lengthening muscle generates force more economically — roughly and reliably more than shortening muscle. Advanced eccentric methods exploit that gap; general training just makes sure the lowering half is not wasted.
Is eccentric training why I'm so sore?
Almost certainly, if the work was new. The soreness fades permanently with exposure, which is itself the adaptation — ease in rather than avoiding it forever.
Can beginners do eccentric work?
Beginners live in it: slow lowering is how technique is taught here from day one. The heavy, targeted versions come later; the controlled ones start immediately.
